(Atlantic) The Nishna Valley YMCA has been busy this summer with attendance on the rise in the aquatic center. Despite the rise in attendance, lifeguards have been hard to come by. According the American Lifeguard Association, it has continuously grown harder to find lifeguards.
In 2024, the ALA claims that about a third of the country’s public pools were closed or opened sporadically due to the current lifeguard shortage.
Chelsea Rush, the aquatics coordinator for the Nishna Valley Family YMCA says that they will offer a lifeguarding class in late July, in hopes of finding more lifeguards for next year, after they were unable to have a lifeguard class this spring due to low numbers.
Rush says the class will be offered for those going back to college who want a winter job, high school kids who want to become lifeguards and adults. The class will be also used to train those who are interested in becoming a lifeguard next summer.
