(Harlan, IA) The Harlan Cyclones came into this season with a pair of new coaches in Brett Croghan and Nolan Reese, trying to rebuild a program that has been struggling the last couple of seasons. Last year the Cyclones finished with a record of 3-29, with underclassmen on the field all over the place.
This season, Harlan has gotten off to a rough start dropping both games in a double-header against No. 15 ranked Creston, followed by a 8-0 loss against ADM. After starting 0-3 on the year, Harlan got the win against Denison 9-4 last night.
Croghan says they need to continue to build on their youth as the season goes on.
For a team that has struggled in the past couple of years, the pitching hasn’t started off how they would want giving up 39 runs in just four games. In the double-header against Creston, they were out scored 27 to 8.
For the young team, Croghan wants to put the emphasis on his defense, and he believes the bats will come as they get more at-bats throughout the season.
Croghan recognizes the difficulty of playing in the Hawkeye 10 and wants to build on the experience the younger players have as they go forward.
Harlan will take on Atlantic in a double-header at home Monday, June 2, with the first game starting at 5:00 pm.
