(Washington, D.C.) – The Department of Justice is investigating the sharp rise in egg prices to determine whether companies have colluded to inflate prices or restrict consumer supply. The inquiry initially began during the Trump administration.
Iowa U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley, appearing on the Capitol Hill report says the Department of Justice is investigating the price of eggs much like they would any antitrust violation. He says the investigation will center around any collusion against people producing the egg.
Senator Grassley says it will be difficult to prove. However, he applauds the Justice Department for looking into it because there might be collusion amongst big egg producers.
Senator Grassley says it is hard to say how long it will take for the market to regulate. He says 160 million chickens have been killed over a four-year period because of Avian Influenza. Bird Flu killed many baby chicks before they made to the house to lay eggs. He says until the industry is up and going again, there is going to be a shortage of eggs.
