(Atlantic) National Weather Service meteorologists will be in Cass County next week to provide a comprehensive multi-media spotter training presentation. Cass County Emergency Management is hosting a Storm Training Program on Tuesday, March 11 at 6:30 p.m. at the Cass County Courthouse.
Cass County Emergency Management Coordinator Mike Kennon says a Des Moines National Weather Service meteorologist will provide participants with information for safely observing and reporting severe weather. This training is open to the public, requires no registration and is FREE.
The course contains information about severe weather climatology, severe thunderstorm types, severe weather threats and how to identify them, reporting severe weather, spotter safety, and severe weather communications. Spotter training classes last one to two hours, are open to the public, and are free.
Cass County Emergency Management Coordinator Mike Kennon says that Trained Spotters provide an invaluable service. Their real-time observations of severe weather help the NWS make warning decisions to protect life and property. Kennon adds that he expects a large turnout for this training after the devastating tornadoes in Minden and Greenfield last spring.
