(London) — Lung cancer is being diagnosed in more people who have never smoked.
A study published this week in the Lancet Respiratory Medicine journal looked at lung cancer cases from around the world from 2022 and found it was the fifth largest cause of cancer deaths among lifelong nonsmokers. The researchers said the biggest contributing factor for those cases was air pollution, which could account for up to 70-percent.
As of 2019, most of the world population lived in areas with air quality levels below standards set by the World Health Organization.
