(Des Moines) State Representative Ray Sorensen says this week, they had their first week of debate in the Iowa House.
The District #23 Representative says two of the bills passed honor and improve the lives of our National Guard members for their service to our country: House File 117 creates the National Guard Service Professional Qualification Scholarship Program, which would cover the cost of certain educational programs approved by the adjutant general and administered by a community college, regent university, or private institution.
Sorensen says this could include programs leading to certification in cybersecurity, IT, emergency medical services, or other relevant fields for National Guard service. The bill also requires the adjutant general to publish a list of approved programs for this scholarship.
House File 118 improves the National Guard Service Scholarship Program by allowing the amount to be calculated based on actual tuition costs and financial aid received. This change is expected to improve the efficiency of distributing funds and potentially free up dollars for more recipients.
