(Atlantic) The Atlantic cross-country teams compete today at the Steve McDermott Invitational Cross Country Meet at Maytag Park in Newton. The girls’ team is coming off a fourth-place finish at the Panorama meet last Thursday. The boys’ team finished ninth. Atlantic Head Coach Dan Vargason says that the two teams are in different spots at this point in the season.
Coach Vargason says they are working on the mental portion of the race on the boy’s side.
The competing teams include ADM, Ames, Atlantic, Dallas Center-Grimes, Des Moines, Lincoln, Grinnell, Knoxville, Marshalltown, Newton, Pella, and South Tama.
On the boy’s side, Dallas Center-Grimes is ranked 5th, ADM 8th, Knoxville 18th, and Ames 19th. In the girls’ race, Pella is ranked number #1, ADM 9th, Dallas Center-Grimes 12, and Ames 14th.
Individually, Caanan Dunham of Pella is rated #2 in Class 3A, Preston Johnson of Marshalltown is ranked 10th in Class 4A, Isaac Rankin of Knoxville is #12 in Class 3A, Mason Gaulke of Pella is #15 in Class 3A, John Moellers, Marshalltown, is 19th, Graham Ibeling, Dallas Center-Grimes, is #24th, Torin Timmerman, of ADM, is #27, and Cadel Conner of Grinnell is #28 in Class 3A.
The girls’ race features Class 3A runners. Pella has seven ranked runners in Class 3A, led by #1 Marissa Ferebee, #3 Elsie Brenneman, #8 Ruth Dunham, #15 Mara Schiebout, #18 Elizabeth Vandevort, #21 Raegan Snieder, and #24 Carleigh Altwine. Others: Piper Messerling of Dallas Center-Grimes is rated #3 in Class 4A, Marley Turk of Ames is #4, Kylie Zylstra of Grinnell is #17, and Maddy Stevens of Dallas Center-Grimes is 27th.
