(Atlantic) At the Tournament of Champions Golf Tournament at the Atlantic Golf and Country Club over the weekend, Alex Fuhs from Webster City won the Open Division, Chris Nelson from Atlantic won the title in the Senior Division, and Rick Carter from Creston won the Super Senior Division.
On the final day, Fuhs and Zach Christianson of Atlantic were tied at one under par, while Alex Bireline of Adair was one stroke back. Fuhs had a strong performance, carding three birdies and two bogeys for a one-under-par 33 on the front nine and finishing with an even-par 69 to win the tournament at one under par. Ross Martens of Jefferson finished runner-up, shooting a two-under-par 67 for his final round. Martens shot an impressive four under par 30 on the front nine and finished with a two-over 37 on the back nine. Zach Christianson of Atlantic finished in third place at one over par. He led the division after day one but finished with a two-over-par 71 for a one-over-par tournament. Alex Bireline of Adair finished fourth at five over. Chase Jahde of Anita and Evan Schuler of Altoona shot seven over, tying for fifth place. Giani Chiodo of Des Moines finished seventh place at +8, Jared Koch of Waukee in eighth place at +8, and Ben Renaud of West Des Moines in ninth place at +9. Joe Shafer, Matt Wynne of Norwalk, Evan Smith of Knoxville, Andrew Martin of Atlantic, and Jackson Tennis of Missouri Valley all finished in a tie for tenth place at ten over par for the tournament.
Chris Nelson of Atlantic performed consistently throughout the tournament and secured first place in the Senior Division, scoring four over par 211 (70-70-71). He finished four strokes ahead of Shane Burmeister of Exira, who scored 66-76-73. Nelson achieved six birdies during the three-day event, ultimately clinching the title. Burmeister had an impressive start, leading after day one with a three-under-par 66. However, his performance fluctuated over the following days, resulting in a plus eight on the tournament with scores of 66, 76, and 73. Eric Boehlert of Ankeny finished third at +9. Steven Montgomery of Des Moines and Darby McLaren of Atlantic finished in a tie for fourth place at +11, and Ryan Clark of Ankeny was fifth with a +12.
Rick Carter and Del Miller finished in a tie for the tournament title in the Super Senior Division, both at five over par. However, Carter earned the championship crown by winning a playoff. Carter shot 77-67-68, while Miller finished with a score of 73-73-66. On Sunday, Miller shot an even-par 34 on the front nine and an impressive three-under-par 32 on the back nine, forcing the playoff. Rick Thompson of Fairfield finished third at +15, John Wilmore fourth at +19, Arnie Leistad fifth +21, Kim Peters of Adair sixth at +25, Jim Simmelink of Adair seventh, +27, Barry McGinn of Council Bluffs eighth at +30, Jeff Morenz of Atlantic ninth at +31, and Rich Ward of Anita finished tenth at +36.
