(Greenfield) A search and rescue mission continued today in Greenfield after Tuesday’s violent Tornado ripped through the heart of the Adair County City of 2,000. The storm destroyed neighborhoods to unrecognizable proportions, tossed vehicles around like matchbox toys, claimed lives, and injured others.
Joan Newell sifted through the pile of rubble, attempting to salvage what she could of her belongings. The Greenfield resident tells KSOM/KS95 she lost everything.
Newell experienced a Tornado when she was 14 years old and knew what to do to try to stay safe.
Fire crews pulled her out of the rubble, and Newell is fine except for a few cuts and scrapes.
Kooper Brown says that he picked up his children at daycare when work let out early. He noticed the wind and the dark clouds, but he did not expect this violent Tornado to roar through the city.
Brown is amazed at how the community is rallying around this adversity.
Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Alex Dinkla says the Tornado struck the county road department shed on the south end of town at around 4:00 p.m. The violent twister roared through the town center, leaving a path of damage behind before exiting south of the Fairgrounds. Today, crews continued the search and rescue mission for anyone unaccounted for. The number of fatalities has not been released at this writing.
