(Manhattan, KS) – While a home game was just about a guaranteed victory for #6 Iowa State this year, away games haven’t gone in the same fashion. That is exactly how Saturday’s contest went for the Cyclones as they were upset 65-58 at Kansas State.
Iowa State tried pulling their weight back in the game late in the second half, going on a 10-0 run to get to just over 7:00 left in the game down to five points. That was the closest that the Cyclones would be throughout the rest of the game.
The top scorer for the Wildcats was Arthur Kaluma who shot 8-12 from the field while putting down 23 points, hauling in seven rebounds, and swiping away three steals. Cam Carter had an impressive game with 21 points while snagging five rebounds and swiping away three steals. The last double-digit scorer for Kansas State was David N’Guessan who shot 4-9 from the field while earning the only double-double of the game with 11 points and 16 rebounds.
On the opposite end of the floor, Curtis Jones led Iowa State as he shot 6-13 from the field for 16 points and also hauled in four rebounds. Two players earned 13 points in the game for the Cyclones. Keshon Gilbert was one of the two with two rebounds while Tamin Lipsey had three rebounds and combined for five steals.
The difference in the game between the two was the capitalization on turnovers. While Iowa State had fewer turnovers than Kansas State 15-14, the Wildcats took advantage with a 20-11 scoring capitalization over the Cyclones. Kansas State also was able to earn 11 of their 36 rebounds on the offensive end while the Cyclones had 27 rebounds in the competition. Iowa State led in field goal percentage, shooting 43.1% from the field while Kansas State shot 40.7%.
Iowa State will await to see who their opponent is for the Big XII Conference Tournament as they will likely play in the second quarterfinal round.
