#3 Ohio St. 35, Iowa 7
Hawkeye fans had some hope when they went into the locker room at halftime only down by 7-0 but the Buckeyes erased any upset talk by running away in the second half. On their first possession of the 3rd quarter, Ohio St. faced a 3rd and 6 from their own 43 and Will Howard found Jeremiah Smith for a 54 yard pass. On the next play, Smith made a spectacular one handed catch in the corner of the end zone for a 14-0 lead. Hawks QB Cade McNamara fumbled after the ensuing kickoff at the Ohio St. 19; three plays later, Howard found the end zone and the game was pretty much decided.
For Ohio St. (5-0, 2-0) Howard finished 21-25 passing for 209 yards 4 TD and 1 INT. Emeka Egbuka had 9 receptions for 71 yards and 3 TD. The Buckeyes had 203 yards rushing spread among 6 different backs with Quinshon Jackson having 13 carries for 78 yards.
For Iowa (3-2, 1-1), McNamara was 14-20 for 98 yards, 1 INT, and 2 lost fumbles. Kaleb Johnson had 15 carries for 86 yards and had the Hawks only score. Jay Higgins had 14 tackles and 1 sack.
Next up for Iowa, they host Washington next Saturday, 11 am kick.
Nebraska 14, Rutgers 7
The Huskers held off a late rally and gave the Scarlet Knights their first loss of the season. The temperature at game time was 97 degrees making it the hottest recorded ever for an October game in Lincoln. Neither team was very hot but Nebraska’s defense stole the show. The Huskers sacked Rutgers QB Athan Kaliakmanis 4 times, limited the nation’s third-leading rusher Kyle Monaugai to 78 yards and held the Knights to 264 total yards. Kaliakmanis was 15 of 37 for 136 yards, and he was picked twice. The Huskers also kept Rutgers (4-1, 1-1) out of the end zone 6 times on plays from inside the 2.
That made up for season lows from Hsuker QB Dylan Raiola, going 13 of 27 passing for 134 yards. The two Nebraska TD’s were a one yard run from Dante Dowdell and an 11 yard TD run from Janiran Bonner.
Nebraska (5-1, 2-1) has a bye next week; they visit Indiana on Saturday, October 19.
NW Missouri St. 51, Washburn 34
Its the 4th straight win for the Bearcats. Running back Tank Young rushed for 134 yards and two touchdowns, while linebacker Carter Edwards snared a pair of interceptions as Northwest won for the 18th time in 19 tries against the Ichabods. Washburn did have 273 yards in the air but was held to 62 yards on the ground.
Northwest scored the first 20 points but the Ichabods got back to back TDs to only trail 20-14 at the half. Wentric Williams had a 1 yard TD run and Young added a 23 yard scamper to rebuild the lead to 34-14. Washburn got a big play on an 85 yard TD pass from Keller Hurla to Tre Richardson and just before the end of the third quarter Sam Van Dyne found Maury Sullivan for a 9 yard TD to once again make it one score game 34-28.
The Bearcats responded when Chris Ruhnke hit Luke Matthews on a 24 yard pass to set up first and goal. Te’Shaun Porter got into the end zone for his first collegiate TD to make it 41-28. Northwest would add a field goal and Washburn kept their slim comeback hopes alive with a 32 yard TD pass from Van Dyne to Richardson but the Bearcats iced it with a 45 yard TD run from Young after the Cats recovered an onside kick.
Ruhnke was 16-27 passing for 219 yards 1 TD and 1 INT. Matthews had 4 catches for 94 yards. Shane Frederickson had 8 tackles. Northwest improves to 4-2, 4-1; they visit Central Oklahoma next Saturday.
#16 Iowa St. 43, Baylor 21
The Cyclones spotted the Bears a 14-3 lead but ISU would score 16 straight to end the first half and then dominated the second half to remain unbeaten. Trailing 14-12 in the 2nd quarter, Myles Mendeszoon blocked a punt and then returned it 25 yards for a TD. That gave the Iowa St. (5-0, 2-0) a 19-14 halftime lead.
Baylor (2-4, 0-3) would score on the first possession of the 2nd half with Sawyer Robertson finding Ketron Jackson Jr. for a 25 yard TD to retake a 21-19 lead. ISU would answer quickly; they took advantage of a Bears pass interference and a Rocco Becht 43 yard pass to Jaylin Noel — Jaylon Jackson finished the short drive with a 10 yard TD to give Iowa St. a lead they would never give up.
The Bears started a long drive and faced a 4th down and 2 from the ISU 26 and QB Sawyer Robertson passed up the opportunity to scramble for a first down to a wide open field and threw to the end zone. Cyclones Jontez Williams would make an incredible leaping interception right in front of the goal post for the play of the game. ISU then methodically drove down the field and Becht capped a 6 minute drive with a 11 yard TD pass to Jayden Higgins to make it 33-21. It was cruise control from there.
Becht finished 16-25 passing for 277 yards 2 TD and 1 INT. Higgins had 8 catches for 116 yards and a TD. Noel 5 catches for 98 yards. Jackson had a big game with 15 carries for 107 yards and 2 TD. Kooper Ebel led the defense with 8 tackles.
