(Des Moines) Iowa lawmakers are considering a proposed one-point-five billion dollar plan to expand U.S. Highway 30 to four lanes statewide. Eighty percent of the cost could be covered by federal funding. Around a third of Highway 30, around 120 miles, would need to be expanded, not including bypasses and interchanges.
Another bill expected to be signed into law would let Iowans, whose freedom of religion has been violated, seek damages in court. Opponents of the measure say it enables discrimination and lets Iowa business owners deny services to groups of people based on religion. Still, its proponents say it upholds First Amendment rights. If signed, Iowa would join more than 20 states with their version of the law.
