(Des Moines) Iowa residents and work crews are cleaning up after what eventually was categorized Thursday as a Derecho in Iowa. National Weather Service Meteorologist Rod Donovan.
Strong storms with wind gusts of up to 80 miles per hour toppled trees and power lines. Damaging straight line winds were reported near Creston, Ottumwa, Centerville. Even with the drought, not all farmers were happy to have the storms. At least one cornfield near Centerville was reportedly a total loss because of the high wind, but widespread damage was limited primarily to tree falls.
