(Des Moines) Iowa State Auditor Rob Sand wants the legislature to impose stiffer penalties for those convicted of illegally disbursed funds.
Sand believes stiffer penalties will stop or slow this type of criminal activity.
Sand says these types of cases, in general, would lead to charges of theft by misappropriation and or fraud if they involve falsification of documents. Sand says he has investigated scores of these cases.
Sand admits local officials do an excellent job of reporting when they find out something is happening. Rob Sand adds that if someone is doing this, the State Auditor’s Office will catch that person. He says hopefully, sooner rather than later, the state legislature will make it so that people caught doing this will face serious consequences.
