(Des Moines) There’s a new term being used in weather: flash drought. The National Weather Service says traditional droughts typically take months or years to develop, but flash droughts can happen in as little as weeks. Iowa is susceptible to a quicker-than-normal drought due to extended periods of hot, dry weather. The long-range forecast for the state doesn’t offer much relief. The latest U.S. Drought Monitor shows most of Iowa is abnormally dry, with some pockets of low-level drought.
