(Des Moines) Iowa House Representative Tom Moore, of Griswold, said several bills passed out of the Education Committee last week.
House File 7, or the Regent Teacher Prep Review bill, requires the University of Iowa, Iowa State, and the University of Northern Iowa to send definitions of terms found in teacher prep programs by February 27, 2023. It also makes an interim study committee to review practitioner preparation programs.
House File 9, or the Parental/Guardian Consent for Gender Identity at School bill, prohibits school districts from the following:
Other bills passed through committee include House Study Bill 41 which prohibits the Board of Regents from investing public moneys in companies that are owned or controlled by Chinese military or government services.
And, House Study Bill 117, or the “Supplemental State Aid” bill, sets SSA at $106.8M (3%) for the 2023 fiscal year for both the Regular Program and the Categorical Supplements. It also extends the Property Tax Relief Payment (PTRP) an additional year which has the state pick up any property tax growth in the Additional Levy portion of the school funding formula. This bill also includes a transportation equity increase of 3% which equals about $900,000.
