(Pottawattamie Co.) The Pottawattamie County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday received a project update from Summit Carbon Solutions.
Summit Carbon Solutions is partnering with ethanol plants across a five-state region to capture carbon dioxide and channel it to North Dakota where it will be permanently and safely stored underground in deep geologic storage locations.
In Pottawattamie County, the high carbon steel line will run south, just west of Highway M23 between Shelby and Avoca; move east between Hancock and Oakland; then go south again just west of 430th Street and enter into Montgomery County. (Map Located At The Bottom Of This Story)
Kaylee Langrell, with Turnkey Logistics, representing Summit Carbon Solutions, said with this project they expect the ethanol plants to be able to sell into growing markets and the corn producer would be able to sell their corn for a premium.
Langrell said they expect construction to start in late summer 2023. As far as easement acquisitions, in Pottawattamie County they are at around 70-percent of easement miles acquired.
Last week, the Supervisors passed a resolution opposing the use of Eminent Domain laws against private landowners as there is no benefit to the general public. Langrell told the Supervisors that they hope to not have to use Eminent Domain. She said their land agents are willing to work with landowners and there are a number of things that can be negotiated in the easements.
Langrell also addressed the safety concerns. She said they are highly regulated just like a gas or oil pipeline.
Langrell said they will have training with the emergency response in the communities close to the pipeline in the unlikely event that there was a breach in the line. She said they are required by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration to have an emergency plan in place.
