(Area) September 1st marks the start of Iowa’s Teal Only hunting season.
The season has recently expanded to sixteen days. “Not all that long ago the Iowa DNR used to have a four or five day early teal season. We tried to time those days for when the teal were moving through the state and we didn’t always hit it right. The season might be here before the teal get here or the teal might be gone before the season opens.”
Bryan Hayes with the Iowa DNR Office in Lewis says it’s a good opportunity to introduce young or novice hunters to duck hunting. “Teal are especially good because they decoy really well. They fly most of the day. Big ducks later in the season, your mallards, you’ll have peak movement of ducks early and then again late in the day. The teal move all day and they don’t hesitate to buzz your decoy. So it’s a good ”
The breeding conditions were favorable this spring in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota which should lead to a lot of young birds in the migration.
