(Nodaway) Last week, Villisca City Councilman and Democrat Tripp Narup announced his intention to run against Incumbent Republican State Senator Tom Shipley of Nodaway in the newly drawn 9th Senate District.
Tom Shipley ran unopposed in the Republican Primary on June 7. The newly drawn 9th District includes all of Cass, Adams, Montgomery, Page, Taylor, Ringgold, and the western portion of Union County.
The incumbent from Nodaway says he and his colleagues in the chamber worked as a team to bring about tax reform and lower the state’s tax rate.
Additionally, Shipley says the tax reform bill would eliminate taxes on retirement income.
Regarding education, Senator Shipley is a big advocate of operational sharing for rural school districts.
Shipley points to many school districts sharing superintendents and other positions to make schools, significantly smaller communities, more efficient. He says operational sharing money totals $25 to $27 million per year to only 75 percent of the school districts in Iowa, and that is rural schools. Senator Shipley says nearly every school in his Senate district participates in some sharing situation.
Shipley says the operational sharing agreement will sunset in the program and expires in 2025. Shipley says they are pushing for a five-year and possible 10-year extension on the operational sharing program.
Tom Shipley is seeking his third term in the Iowa Senate.
