(Harlan) Harlan Schools Superintendent Dr. Jenny Barnett updated the City Council Tuesday night on the upcoming bond election.
Dr. Barnett explained the needs at the Primary School.
She said they had many long discussions on the Intermediate School and what they found was to renovate the building it would cost about 80 percent of building a brand-new building, so they came to a consensus to build a new building.
The Middle School gym is not air-conditioned so they would put in some air conditioning there and do some roof work. The High School project would include renovating the majority of the classrooms, renovate and bring the locker rooms up to code, renovate the auditorium and then look at a Hall of Excellence that would open up the commons area and the library down to the gyms to show the academic, arts and athletic pride that they have.
Dr. Barnett said the total project cost is $32 million. On the ballot will be a $22.9 million bond referendum for a general obligation bond.
Dr. Barnett said the second question is that they need to adopt a revenue purpose statement; that has zero tax impact on anyone and that’s something they do about every ten years.
For anyone interested in more information on the proposed plans, public meetings will be held August 23rd at the Harlan United Methodist Church, August 24th in Earling and then another meeting will be held in Harlan before the election. The election takes place on Tuesday, September 13. More information can also be found online at https://bondissue.org/harlan/.
