(Audubon) Dogs running at large is becoming a hot topic in Audubon.
Dogs have attacked both livestock and other dogs. City Clerk Joe Foran warns the city is going to stiffen the consequences. “We’ve got some issues with a couple of huskies in town that have caused a lot of damage. We are trying to stiffen up our code a little bit more to hopefully curb some of that issue.”
The current ordinance has fines beginning at $30 and rising $10 for each offense. “The police pick it up. You have to pay an impound fee. They keep it for a day or so at the shop and then it’s moved up to the veterinary clinic in Manning.”
The vet clinic asks owners to see a receipt of the impound fee before releasing the animals. “If there’s no issues with the dog they’ll board it and give medicine and everything else. Then you are expected to pay for all of that before you get your dog out. The issue is that’s kind of a recurring thing with some people. We are going to stiffen it to more of a three strikes you’re out kind of thing. We aren’t going to allow you to have an animal in city limits if you can’t take care of them.”
Foran expects the council to take action on the first reading of a new dogs at large ordinance during the September meeting.
