(Harlan) The Harlan girls cross country team brings back a host of runners from team that finished 7th at last year’s state meet.
Longtime assistant Zach Klaassen takes over as the head coach following the retirement of Doug Renkly. He’ll have an impressive group to work with. “We have Lindsey Sonderman coming back from winning the conference last year as a freshman. She’s been looking pretty good this summer. We expect good things out of her. Taylor Bieker, Kayla Anderson, Jenna Gessert, Emily Schechinger, we have a few kids that are hungry and ready to go. I think the expectation is that we are going to do well again this year.”
The team understands the routine and has been a part of a strong tradition. Kaia Bieker is among the biggest losses to graduation. Klaassen says it’s still a little bit too early to talk about specific goals. “Right now we are just talking about practice expectations and things like that. Being consistent and pushing all the way through. As soon as we get about a week before our first meet we’ll start talking about expectations as individuals and as a group.”
The team begins the season Saturday, August 27th at Glenwood.
