(Atlantic) The Cass County 4H and FFA Meat Goats have brand new pens thanks to a successful fundraiser supported by area businesses and other community members.
Ryan Smith, Assistant Meat and Dairy Goat Show Superintendent, says last year, a group brainstormed on how they could be proactive in fixing up the current wooden pens. “Superintendent Chris Scholl, his wife Jody, my Wife and I, and Jerry McCory put our heads together and discussed how we could take advantage of grant opportunities and raise some money to purchase new stalls for the youth of Cass County.
“The old stalls were wooden, significantly shorter, and wired together. And there were some safety risks involved with the old ones,” said Smith. “Goats would jump the old stalls; youth often cut themselves on the wire and made herdsman ship more difficult. The metal stalls we have now resolved all those issues and provide a nice environment for the goats and the youth.”
Smith says they raised approximately $15,000.00 over the past year through donations and grant opportunities. “We can’t thank all the donors enough; this wouldn’t have been possible without them.”
