(Atlantic) Twenty-seven Atlantic High School Spanish Students and four chaperones are in Costa Rica for an eight-day trip. High School Spanish teacher Dan Vargason says students must have two years of Spanish and carry a certain grade point average to qualify for the journey.
“I use the trip as an incentive,” said Vargason. “We have low numbers, so we dangle that carrot out there to incentivize students to complete two years of Spanish.”
Vargason wants the students to see what Costa Rica looks like and experience the culture. “We usually visit a school, see all the wildlife, and use our Spanish.”
The trip costs each student $3,000, and the group held fundraisers throughout the year to raise the money.
The students and chaperones left Atlantic for Costa Rica at 3:00 a.m. on Tuesday.
