Harold Joseph Schwery was born August 9, 1933 to Priscilla (Musich) and Leo Schwery. He was baptized and confirmed in the St. Boniface Catholic Church. He also attended St. Boniface Catholic School.
Harold married Alice Koesters January 28, 1954 in the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa. This union was blessed with 9 children, Dean, Dale, Dan, David, Duane, Donna, Darrin, Deb, and Dallas.
Harold was a proud Veteran who served in the United States Army from 1954-1956. During his deployment flight from California to Hawaii the plane he was flying on lost an engine. The hours seemed like days before they landed safely in Hawaii. Harold said he was never so scared and each soldier kissed the ground and cheered to be on dry land. After his honorable discharge from the Army he returned home to the farm he grew up on and began his many years of farming, raising livestock, selling seed corn and caring for his family.
Harold had a love for baseball and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. He played ball and coached his sons (and many others) over a 30 year span. After hanging up his coach’s hat he moved on to assisting with announcing Harvest Tournament games in Westphalia. Harold also served his community by being a member of the Westphalia Fire Department for 30 years, served on the Credit Union Board, a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion and was an active member of the St. Boniface Church. During his free time he enjoyed having coffee at the Klubhaus, playing cards, golfing, attending his children’s and grandchildren’s events and accompanying his wife to the Casino.
He is survived by his wife Alice Schwery of Westphalia, IA; children Dean (Joni) Schwery of Westphalia; Dan (Bev) Schwery of Westphalia; Duane Schwery of Westphalia; Donna (Greg) Coenen of Omaha, NE; Darrin (Mary Pat) Schwery of Bennington, NE; Deb (Mike) Schwery-Glenn of Omaha, NE; Dallas (Jenny) Schwery of Bennington, NE; daughter-in-law Jan Schwery of Fremont, NE; 17 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; sister Arlene (Mike) Pauley of Portsmouth, IA
