(Des Moines) Southwest Iowa is getting its first taste of summer, with temperatures reaching the 90’s on Friday and more 90-degree weather forecast for today.
Cory Martin, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Des Moines, says the state is moving into a more summertime pattern which is more typical for July. Martin says a ridge of high pressure is building over the Midwest, causing temperatures to rise to the low nineties in southwest Iowa. The humidity is going to increase as well.
Martin says the high heat and humidity can cause health problems for vulnerable populations. “It’s important for people to stay away from the heat for a long period of time and drink plenty of water,” said Martin.
Martin says unfortunately rain chances are slim in the coming days. “I wish I had better news because the state does need some rain,” said Martin. “There are chances of showers and thunderstorms next week, but it doesn’t look like any of those storms will be widespread.”
Martin says there’s a 30-percent chance of rain Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday for southwest Iowa.
