(Des Moines) Governor Kim Reynolds gave an update regarding the deadly attack on staff at Anamosa State Penitentiary at her press conference Wednesday morning.
On March 23rd, multiple staff members were assaulted at the Anamosa State Penitentiary. A department nurse and a correctional officer died as a result of their injuries. Governor Reynolds said the event was horrific and evil.
Reynolds said a comprehensive internal investigation is already underway and Director Skinner announced to her staff last Friday that some changes would be implemented immediately.
Reynolds said in addition to the internal investigation they will also conduct a thorough external investigation and together they will address any issues the investigations may reveal. She said changes may require additional investments, something she is fully committed to doing and this includes making sure the Department and its facilities are adequately staffed. She said at the current time, the vast majority of positions within the Department of Corrections are filled and funded.
Reynolds said as the investigations continue she will keep Iowans informed about their outcomes and the next steps they will be taking.
