(Atlantic) The Atlantic girls soccer program will be breaking in a lot of new faces this season.
The Trojans only return a few players with varsity experience. Coach Dan Vargason says, “Grace Barkley played as a freshman. She was our starting sweeper. She was a good, solid defender for us a couple of years back. Hannah Carlson was out two years ago as well. She played defense for us and got some good defensive experience. The only other player that really has a lot of varsity experience returning is Maycie Waters. She got hurt two years ago so she was limited, but we were very happy with what we saw in that short time she was able to play.”
Coach Vargason looks for defense to lead the way while they get their feet under them. “The biggest thing right now is I feel like we have a very solid defensive group. We’ve got three or four girls in the mix that are competing for three spots. I would say right now Quinn Grubbs, Mia Muller, and Grace Barkley are leading that. Hannah Carlson is in the mix, but I kind of like her as an outside mid as well.”
Offensively they’ll have some competition for spots. “Mattie Dvorak, Lindley Eblen, Irelyn Gundy, Aubrey Guyer, Jada Jensen, Taylor McCreedy, those are all kids that are fighting for positions. They are all first year players or freshmen or sophomores. So we have a lot of players in the mix competing for spots. Maycie Waters has already played, but she’s in that same mix. Everybody is still competing for a spot.”
Vargason admits none of their handful of goalie prospects have any high school experience, but he’s excited about the potential some of them have. The Trojans host Kuemper Catholic on April 5th.
