(Audubon) The Audubon girls basketball team has won six of their last eight games and put a couple of feathers in their cap last week. The Wheelers notched back to back road wins at perennial Western Iowa Conference powers Treynor and IKM-Manning.
Head coach Darran Miller says defense has sparked the team’s improved play. They’ve allowed just 37 points per game in January. “Defensively we’ve done a much better job. Against Treynor we executed a game plan very well. We threw a diamond and one at them and our team did a good job. Rebounding also, Jaci and company have done a good job limiting teams to one shot.”
Jaci Christensen leads the Wheelers with 11.6 rebounds per game. Christensen is the 2nd leading scorer on the team at 14.3 points per game while Aleah Hermansen scores 15.3 per night. Christensen had 13 rebounds against Treynor and 19 rebounds against IKM-Manning last week in two huge Audubon wins.
“I think it meant a lot. Especially going to Treynor and they were ranked in the top ten in the state. It was definitely a team effort. It doesn’t take just five, it takes it everybody sitting on the bench. It was a good confidence for us. IKM-Manning has been good every year and to go up there and play like we did was pretty good. And the week before we were able to beat AHSTW at Avoca too which is never easy and they have a good program. The girls have been working hard and I think it’s starting to pay off.”
Tuesday night they’ll face a Tri-Center squad that they beat 65-36 earlier this season. Coach Miller looks for his team to stick to their strengths of playing good defense and getting the ball inside. The Wheelers are 8-7 on the season.
