(Council Bluffs) The Council Bluffs Police Department says two accidents closed down Interstate 80 this (Saturday) morning.
The two crashes happened at around 8:30 a.m. on a snow and ice-covered roadway at the 5-mile marker of westbound Interstate 80.
The first accident involved a westbound semi that lost control on the snow and ice sending it into the median. The semi crashed through the metal guard rails between the bridges over Valley View Drive and Mosquito Creek. It continued down the hill and landed on Valley View Drive, blocking the entire roadway. Luckily no vehicles were on Valley View at the time of the crash. The occupants of the semi were not injured.
The crash closed Valley View Drive from approximately 8:10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The second crash involved a Nissan Rogue and a Tractor Trailer. The investigation showed a westbound Nissan Rogue in front of a semi when the driver of the Rogue lost control on the icy road. The semi driver attempted to avoid the crash causing the trailer to jackknife. The back of the trailer struck the top of the concrete bridge rail, dismantling the tandem wheels. The trailer slide down the bridge rail with a portion of the box hanging over the edge. The semi-trailer combo came to rest with the Nissan Rogue’s hood slightly under the trailer. The tandem wheels landed on the roadway by the first crash. No injuries were reported.
