(Audubon) Audubon will have a representative at the state cross country meet on Saturday. Grace Slater punched her ticket with 5th place finish at the state qualifying meet in Audubon last week.
After placing 19th last year the junior is hungry for a spot on the deck. “I’m really wanting to make it to the podium. I missed out on it by four places last year, so my goal is to make it to the podium, but I’ll just be happy with finishing at state.”
It’ll be a unique week of preparation as Slater get ready for state. “It’ll be a little bit different because my coach is in quarantine. He sits in his truck and uses a megaphone. He’s still there, but it’s a little weird.”
It’s Slater’s 3rd straight year as an individual qualifier. “My first year, freshman year I did not run my best. I was just a scared little freshman and I didn’t know what to do. Last year I had a bit of a better idea of how to run it and I was able to run my hardest there.”
The Class 1A girls race will take place at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Fort Dodge.
