(Atlantic) The Cass County Board of Supervisors approved establishing speed limits on roadways to and from the new rock quarry south of Atlantic at their meeting this morning.
The item was placed on the agenda after three county residents expressed their concerns about roadway safety issues associated with the increased traffic to and from the quarry.
40 mph speed limits will be established and signs erected on 620th Street from Oxford Road (G43) north to the corporate limits of the City of Atlantic; Lansing Road from US Highway 6 to 620th Street; and Jasper Road from 620th Street to US Highway 71.
The Supervisors also heard from another county resident who owns a farm on 595th Street near Lansing Road and his concerns about the truck traffic to and from the quarry. He said his main concern is the blind hill and his hope was to at least get a stop sign at the top of the hill to get the truck traffic slowed down. Supervisors Steve Green and Mark O’Brien said they both did their own research and sat in the area and watched the traffic. They both agreed a stop sign should be put in.
“I can’t see any way to make that intersection acceptable from a safety standpoint other than a stop sign,” said Steve Green.
No action was taken on this issue at today’s meeting.
