(Council Bluffs) An Officer-involved shooting is under investigation after an officer fired his service weapon during a struggle with a suspect attempting to steal a car.
Two Council Bluffs Police officers, investigating a shoplifting incident in the Wal-mart parking lot, located a white Mazda CX-9 with stolen plates. Moments later a male subject walked up to the car and got into the driver’s seat. As Officers approached the car, the driver locked the doors and started the motor.
A preliminary investigation indicates that one of the officers fired his service handgun at the driver during the struggle while attempting to remove the suspect from the vehicle. The subject put the car in gear and sped off striking a parked vehicle.
The Officer who fired his duty handgun received minor injuries to his arm and was treated at a local hospital and released. The suspect fled the scene. Officer’s located the car abandoned near the Interstate 29/I 80 interchange. Officers did not locate the suspect. It is unknown if he was injured.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation was called in to review the actions of the officer involved in the shooting.
The Council Bluffs Police Department will continue to investigate the assault that took place on the officer and will file appropriate charges once the subject is positively identified and located.
