(Audubon) The Audubon County Historical Society continues their fundraising efforts to maintain and improve the Nathaniel Hamlin Park and Museums.
“We’ve got this little gem in Audubon County and we just want to take care of it,” said Audubon County Historical Society Treasurer Ed Wiederstein.
Wiederstein said for the past six years they have been working on the “Poor House”.
“We just finished up tuck pointing all sides of the house and it took maybe three years to get that all done and it’s been a very expensive project because there just aren’t too many people that do tuck pointing and now it should last I hope another 100 years,” said Wiederstein.
Wiederstein said they have a number of other projects that need completed including updating the wiring in the house.
“We’d like to get some underground electricity into the house, we have overhead electricity, but we’d like to get it underground, it’ll be a little safer, and then update some of the electrical parts in the house and that’s not a cheap affair either,” explained Wiederstein. “Some of the other things that we’re doing with the park; the school house really needs to have some windows repaired, on the inside the ceiling is kind of giving way a little bit, the door needs some work, the floor needs a little bit of work. You know, we’ve got all these old buildings down there and when you have something old it just takes a lot of maintenance on them and we want to keep them so people can look at them and see how things used to be and we want it to be in fine shape so people can be proud of what we’ve done down there.”
Wiederstein said they have sent out some fundraising letters to gather donations. Otherwise, donations can be sent to the Audubon County Historical Society at 1601 150th Street, Audubon, Iowa, 50025. Donations can also be made on the Nathaniel Hamlin Facebook Page.
Wiederstein said unfortunately they will not have their Fallapalooza this year, which is one of their big fundraising efforts.
