(Area) Squirrel and Rabbit Hunting Seasons open later his week.
Saturday, September 5th is the start date for a pair of hunting season typically geared towards beginners. Bryan Hayes with the Iowa DNR Office in Lewis “Particularly the squirrel season is a really good one for young hunters. You get out into the forest and wait for squirrels to present themselves. If you spook them, there is always that next ridge that’s going to have some squirrels.”
Hayes says there is still a fair number of squirrel hunters in Iowa. “Last year we estimated 15,000 squirrel hunters harvested approximately 80,000 squirrels. At one time a lot more people participated in squirrel hunting.”
Hayes says Rabbit Hunting opens Saturday, but most of the activity will come later in the fall after the crops are out and the weather cools off.
