(Atlantic) Harvest operations got underway this week at Milk Unlimited, located south of Atlantic. Managing Partner Kelly Cunningham says corn silage yields are not quite as good as last year, but it is still a decent crop.
All of the farm’s corn is chopped for silage, coming from fields that have grown continuous corn for nearly three decades. The crop is cut into quarter-inch particles, then processed through a roller mill to a dime-sized particle size before being fed to the dairy herd. The goal is to chop about 41,000 tons of silage to feed the 3,400-cow operation, which produces fluid milk.
Cunningham has 2,850 cows that are currently producing milk.
Milk Unlimited, located at 59100 Memphis Road, Atlantic, Iowa, produces around 90 pounds of milk per cow per day. That equates to roughly 32,000 to 35,000 gallons of milk daily.
