Saturday Iowa State Fair Attendance Sets New All-Time Record Day Attendance
(Des Moines, IA) — Saturday was yet another record-breaking day at the Iowa State Fair. Day 10 of the fair broke the all-time record for single day attendance, with 130-thousand-654 people. The 2026 fair is also on pace to break the all-time fair attendance record. After consistent six-figure days last week and the record-breaking weekend, Sunday attendance will only have to come in at about 68-thousand people, to make this year’s fair the most-attended of all time. The 2024 Iowa State Fair holds the current attendance record at one-million-182-thousand-682 fairgoers. This year’s attendance totals are expected to be announced later today.

(Waukee, IA) — A football coach and high school teacher at Waukee has been arrested and charged with OWI. The Waukee Community School District confirmed that Gabe Bakker was arrested Friday. The district says he reported the arrest to his team on Saturday in an email. The district plans to follow board policy and established personnel procedures.

(Knoxville, IA) — A skydiver is in critical condition after crashing into a field in Knoxville. Rescue crews from the Knoxville Fire Department, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and Knoxville Police Department were dispatched just before 11:30 a.m. Saturday. After some time spent searching for the skydiver, responders airlifted the person to a Des Moines hospital.

(Des Moines, IA) — More measles cases are being confirmed in Southern Iowa. The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services says, as of Friday, 16 cases have been identified, with evidence of person-to-person spread. That’s up from 12 cases reported one week ago. Iowa HHS also added one potential exposure location, saying anyone at an Ottumwa Pizza Ranch restaurant the afternoon of Friday, August 14, could have been exposed to measles. State and local public health agencies say they’re still working with affected families and community leaders to identify illnesses, share information and ensure access to vaccination.

(Grinnell, IA) — It has been 34 years since Tammy Zywicki [[ zuh-WICKY ]] was last seen alive and investigators say they have a new lead. The 21-year-old Zywicki was driving from the Chicago area back to central Iowa for college when she disappeared. Her car was found abandoned in central Illinois and Zywicki was found stabbed to death nine days later in Missouri. Investigators say they’re looking for information about Theresa Belenske, who also went by Teri and was a known hitchhiker at the time of Zywicki’s death. They believe she could have been traveling with an unidentified truck driver spotted near Zywicki’s car. Anyone with information is asked to contact Illinois State Police or the FBI.

(Iowa City, IA) — The University of Iowa has broken ground on a new Field Hockey Operations Center. The state-of-the-art facility is being built next to Grant Field and is expected to transform the school’s field hockey program. Hawkeye field hockey coach Lisa Cellucci says the university has been working for more than a decade to build a dedicated home for the program. The Iowa field hockey team opens its 2026 season Friday at Wake Forest.
