(Alleman) U.S. Rep. Zach Nunn recently announced $500,000 in federal funding to complete a flood and drought monitoring network across Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District.
The Iowa Flood Center at the University of Iowa will use the funding to install monitoring stations in the district’s remaining 18 counties without coverage, giving every county access to real-time flood and drought information.
The project will also launch the Iowa Drought Information System, a public platform providing data to farmers, first responders, researchers and local communities. Officials say the information will help improve water management, conservation planning and emergency preparedness.
Nunn secured the funding through the FY2026 Community Project Funding process. The project will be administered by the University of Iowa’s IIHR—Hydroscience & Engineering through the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service.
The investment is part of Nunn’s broader efforts to address Iowa’s water management, flood response and water quality challenges.
