(Honey Creek) Community members looking to view the Perseids, a popular annual meteor shower known for featuring 50 to 100 meteors per hour, are invited to join Pottawattamie Conservation for the Perseid Night Sky Event on Friday, August 14th from 8:00 p.m. to midnight at Crescent Hill at Hitchcock at 17026 Snowhill Lane Honey Creek, Iowa 51542.
The Perseid Night Sky Event is designed to give community members a place to gather away from city lights and view the wonders of the night sky, learn about light pollution, and interact with members of The Omaha Astronomical Society, who will have telescopes for viewing celestial bodies up close.
Guests are welcome to bring blankets, chairs, telescopes, and to picnic under the Perseids. Entrance to the event is $5 per vehicle, cash only. Entrance is free for visitors with a Pottawattamie Conservation Foundation membership, which can be purchased online at pottconservation.com.
Vehicles will be permitted into the park until 10:00 p.m. and must exit the park by 12:00 a.m. Flashlights and headlamps are encouraged, especially red light, which is less disruptive to wildlife.
The public should note that this event is extremely dependent on the weather and cloud cover. Seeing meteors is not guaranteed. Any changes to the event will be posted on pottconservation.com and the Crescent Hill at Hitchcock Facebook page. Pottawattamie Conservation highly recommends checking either of these locations for possible event updates prior to heading out for the evening.
