(Coon Rapids Bayard, IA) — Coon Rapids Bayard showed why it is the number one ranked baseball team in Class 1A as they blew past AHST in the District Finals on Saturday 16-2.
Ty Heydon put on a show for the Crusaders with the glove, the arm and the bat.
AHSTW made things interesting in the top of the first when Chase Wheatley led off the game with a double off CRB starter Max Shirbroun. Ty Nelson and Cash Freeman then walked to load the bases. Coon Rapids Bayard Head Coach John Waddle did not hesitate to yank Shirbron and bring in his ace Ty Heydon to try to get out the jam. He struck out the first two batters but did a throw a wild pitch to Taylen Hansen to score Wheatley but Heydon got a pop up to limit the damage. However, the Vikings led 1-0.
The lead would be short lived — the Crusaders sent 14 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first. Cal Heydon led off the inning with a towering solo HR to left. Ty Heydon capped the inning with a grand slam to left as CRB scored 10 runs on 5 hits against two Viking pitchers — Kip Lamp and Hansen. The first inning took 40 minutes total and both starting pitchers went a combined one third of an inning.
With a 10-1 lead, Coon Rapids Bayard went into cruise control, scoring 3 more runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings. The Vikings added one more in the top of the third on a RBI single from Freeman.
CRB used four pitchers and kept Heydon available to throw in the Substate Final. Three Viking pitchers hit 4 batters and walked 10 batters.
Ty Heydon also made some great defensive plays including a diving catch robbing Wheatley of a hit. The three Heydon brothers went a combined 4 for 5 with 2 HR, a double, 6 walks, and 8 RBI. Ty Heydon even got the ultimate respect in baseball when he was walked with the bases loaded in the 2nd inning.
Coon Rapids Bayard is now 27-3 and will face Lenox in the Substate Finals on Tuesday, July 14 in West Des Moines.
