(Cass Co) In his report to the Cass County Board of Supervisors Tuesday morning, County Engineer Trent Wolken discussed the tornado and heavy rains that swept through the southeastern portion of the county Friday night. He said road crews have been out assessing and repairing affected areas.
Wolken said the county did not experience any road washouts, but there were some locations where road shoulders had broken away.
Wolken also addressed SF 378, which takes effect July 1 and increases the speed limit on certain state and county roads from 55 mph to 60 mph. He said the County Engineers Association will meet next week to determine a unified approach to implementing the law, as counties will be required to evaluate all affected roads and make numerous changes.
Wolken said there is no way they can be fully compliant by July 1.
Wolken noted that counties will not have to replace speed limit signs entirely. Instead, they can place stickers over the existing “55” signs to reflect the new speed limit. The stickers cost $10.50 each, and all expenses associated with the change must be taken care of by the county.
