(Des Moines) A new Iowa law addressing disruptive student behavior is getting teacher and IA State Education Association support across the state. Senate File 2428 creates new, strict procedures for handling violent and disruptive behavior in school.
The procedures give teachers more authority when students are being disrespectful to them or other students. This includes immediately removing violent students from the classroom, offering three strikes for non-violent students before a removal, and mandatory guardian-teacher conferences before the student is allowed back in the classroom.
The law also includes procedures for students with individualized education plans, or IEPs, and allows teachers to request support such as a trauma debrief after a violent or disruptive incident. Teachers injured because of a violent student disruption may receive up to three days of leave.
The law was signed by Gov. Kim Reynolds. It takes effect on July 1, 2026.
