(Iowa) The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says the peak pheasant hatch will occur this week.
John Lorenzen, with the DNR office in Lewis, said that during the roadside surveys conducted each August, DNR employees record the number of pheasant chicks they observe and estimate their age based on size. Using that data, the agency estimates that the peak pheasant hatch will occur between June 10 and June 15.
Lorenzen said the peak hatch is critical to pheasant numbers heading into the fall because most of the birds harvested by hunters are those that hatched during the spring.
