AAA: Gas Prices Down Across Iowa
(Des Moines, IA) — There’s less pain at the gas pumps in Iowa. Gas prices have dropped 21 cents a gallon for regular unleaded in Iowa compared to last week. Triple-A Motor Club says the average price is three-91 a gallon, which is nearly a dollar more than a year ago. Diesel prices in the state are $5 a gallon, lower than the national average but still $1.70 higher than a year ago. Gas prices hit a four-year high this spring after the US war in Iran stalled oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.
LifeServe Iowa Reports Critically Low Blood Levels Heading Into Summer
(Des Moines, IA) — Fewer people are donating blood, and donation centers across Iowa are feeling the effects. Tim Paluch with Life Serve Blood Center says demand will increase significantly in the summer due to increased physical activity and accidents. At the same time, LifeServe is critically low on six out of eight blood types. Paluch says that over the past decade, people 30 and younger have been donating 50 percent less and failing to replace aging donors. The blood center supplies blood to more than 170 hospitals in four states, and is the primary blood supplier in central Iowa.
May Midwest Business Conditions Index: Growth, Concerns About Inflation
(Omaha, NE) — A monthly survey of regional business leaders is a bit of a mixed bag for the month of May. The Midwest Business Conditions Index shows growth in May, but also raises concerns about inflation in the nine-state region that includes Iowa. Midwest Economic Professor Ernie Goss [[ gahss ]] says concerns are stemming from the war in Iran and trade restrictions and tariffs imposed by the Trump Administration. The May index shows the region lost manufacturing jobs for the 10th time in the past 12 months.
Winner of 2026 Coolest Thing Made in Iowa Contest Announced
(Des Moines, IA) — The winner of this year’s Coolest Thing Made in Iowa contest is a portable, emissions-free power station built by Mi-T-M Corp. in Peosta Iowans nominated a field of 58 products manufactured in the state. That field was whittled to just four in a bracket-style, head-to-head competition by early May. The winner was announced on Wednesday at the annual conference for the Iowa Association of Business and Industry.
