(Des Moines, IA) — There will be a new Class 1A basketball state champion. Woodbine made sure of that by eliminating Madrid in the Substate Finals 56-51 from the Knapp Center on Saturday evening.
Woodbine jumped on Madrid in the first quarter — leading 5-3 they went on a 14-0 run. Woodbine led 19-8 after the first quarter thanks to 13 points from Landon Blum.
Madrid was not able to make much headway in the 2nd quarter — Woodbine led 28-14 but a Madrid steal and Logan Bogardus lay-up followed by a Jevyn Severson offensive rebound and lay-up cut the lead to 8. Freshman Braden Berry for Woodbine rebounded a missed three and put it back in to give Woodbine a 30-20 lead at the break.
Blum — Woodbine’s leading scorer — would get into foul trouble in the third quarter and had to sit some time on the bench. That got Madrid back in the game. Trailing 36-24, Bogardus hit a big three and turned a Woodbine turnover into a lay up. Brodyn Pryor answered with a three of his own but Severson — the leading scorer for Madrid — got a lay up and a foul, converting the free throw. Madrid was able to cut the lead to 5 but Blum returned and hit a triple at the end of the third quarter to lead 42-34.
Brodyn Pryor hit 2 FT for Woodbine to start the 4th and after a Madrid turnover, Blum got fouled and finished both free throws and the lead was back to 12. Woodbine was leading 52-40 with just over two minutes left when Madrid went on a 5-0 run but Henry Gruver was able to drive and get a lay up. Max Fowler answered for Madrid with an incredible reverse lay up and after a Woodbine turnover, Emerson Bridgewater nailed a three pointer to cut the lead to 54-48 with 1:08 remaining. Madrid ran out of time as Jax Pryor got a lay up on the other end to essentially put the game out of reach.
Madrid (20-5) was led by Jevyn Severson with 17 points; Logan Bogardus had 15; Emerson Bridgewater added 8.
Blum led the Woodbine Tigers (17-8) with 23 points; Brody Pryor had 11; Jax Pryor 9; Henry Gruver 8. The Tigers will face St. Edmond in the first round of the 1A State Tournament on Tuesday, March 10 at 2:00 pm.
