(Villisca) Villisca City Councilman Tripp Narup is running on the Democratic ticket for Iowa House District #18. Griswold Republican incumbent Tom Moore is currently serving his sixth term in the Iowa House.
Narup worked for a large publishing company in St. Louis. In 1995, he moved to Clarinda and retired in Villisca seven years ago. Narup is running on the slogan “More Common Sense, and More Common Courtesy.”
When it comes to policy, Narup is not happy with the state’s budget. He says the state is running a one-billion-dollar-per-year deficit, with six to seven billion dollars remaining in the state’s surplus account.
Additionally, Narup says we need to do a better job of funding our school. He is not fine with the 2% allowable growth the state allotted to schools this year. He says it does not keep pace with inflation, and in southwest Iowa, he says this is a huge problem because smaller rural school districts are losing students due to declining population.
Narup says something needs to change in agriculture. He says the last check price of corn falls to $1.00 to $1.50 under the cost of production.
Tripp Narup says he is opposed to the six-week abortion ban; he says from a healthcare standpoint, he would much rather that decision be made by a doctor and the woman involved, and not in Des Moines. Additionally, Narup opposes book bans in schools and does not consider that up to eight people in a school district (the librarian, principal, superintendent, and a five-member school board) decide what books belong in a library.
Narup ran against Moore two years ago for the District #18 seat in the Iowa Legislature.
Iowa House District #18 includes Cass, Montgomery, and 2/3 of Page County.
