(Iowa) The American Legion Department of Iowa is raising concerns about Senate Study Bill 3079, which has been renamed Senate File 2282. The bill updates how Iowa delivers veterans services, specifically addressing the restructuring of funding for county veteran service officers based on performance.
Mitch Brahms, 7th District Commander of the American Legion Department of Iowa, said their main concern is that the organization was never asked for input on the bill.
In part, the bill would restructure funding for county veteran service officers (VSOs) from a flat, equal distribution to a a performance-based system. It would also modernize how claims are submitted by using a single, statewide electronic system.
On February 25th, a subcommittee recommended amendment and passage of Senate File 2282.
Brahms said they are asking legislators to speak with all of the Veterans Service Organizations to learn what they are doing and what they think before pushing this bill through.
