Fentanyl Overdose Deaths Down In 2025
(Des Moines, IA) Fentanyl-related overdoses are down in Iowa, following a nationwide trend. The National Center for Health Statistics says Iowa had 22 fewer fentanyl related-deaths in 2025 compared to a year prior. They add that’s good for a five-point-two percent decrease. Nationwide, that number is closer to 34-percent. They said the U.S. saw 38-thousand-514 deaths associated to fentanyl last year.
Man Detained By ICE Set To Appear In Court
(Sioux City, IA) A man detained by ICE after a pursuit is set to appear in court Tuesday. Raul Torres-Olivares was taken into custody after a pursuit and crash on 37th and Jackson streets in Sioux City last Wednesday. He has been held in Woodbury County Jail ever since. He was charged with illegal re-entry as a felon. Torres-Olivares was deported in 2011 after serving a prison sentence for a shaken-baby death of his girlfriend’s ten-month-old son and was removed from the U.S. three times since.
Congresswoman Ashley Hinson Announces $18.7M Heading To Iowa
(Des Moines, IA) Congresswoman Ashley Hinson says more than 18-point-seven-million dollars are coming to Iowa. The funding will be for development projects in Iowa’s Second Congressional District. Three million will be for the North Iowa Corridor Workforce Housing Initiative in Cerro Gordo County. Three-point-seven million will be directed to the Swine Career and Technical Education Barn. Ten million will be directed to the Eastern Iowa Airport and two million will go to stormwater, sewer and road repairs in Ely.
One Man Dead In Stabbing On Pierce Street
(Sioux City, IA) A man is dead after a stabbing on Pierce Street in Sioux City. It happened around 6:15 a.m. on Monday. Police are investigating the incident as a homicide. In a release, Sioux City Police say it was a targeted event and there is no ongoing threat to the public. It happened on the one-thousand block of Pierce Street.
Sioux City Council Approves $53k Consulting Agreement
(Sioux City, IA) — The Sioux City Council is approving a consulting agreement to develop a site on Pierce Street. The 53-thousand dollar deal is with TetonRidge Consulting to outline a development strategy going forward. The site is currently home to a Walgreens, Burger King and shuttered Ashley HomeStore. It was purchased by the city on December 30th. The council passed a resolution to rent the Ashley HomeStore location to Mozak’s Furniture and Flooring beginning on March 15th and ending in October 2027 while Walgreens is under contract at the location until 2027.
