ICE Detained Man Convicted Of Voluntary Manslaughter In Sioux City
(Sioux City, IA) — ICE detained a Sioux City man Wednesday who was previously convicted of voluntary manslaughter and other charges. Officials say Raul Torres-Olivares fled officers but then crashed into an ICE vehicle before trying to take off on foot — causing several thousand dollars in damages. Torres-Olivares was responsible for the death of his girlfriend’s baby son in 2003. He was released from prison and deported in 2011. He’s now likely to face more felony charges for illegal re-entry, assault and other related charges.
Man Pleads Guilty To Sex Exploitation Of Child In Sioux City
(Sioux City, IA) — A man pleads guilty Thursday to sexual exploitation of a child in Sioux City. A spokesperson with the U.S. Attorney’s Office says Jorge Monrroy got a minor female drunk, recorded them having sex and then distributed the video last summer. This case came through in part of the Project Safe Childhood initiative to help fight child sexual exploitation and abuse epidemic.
ISU Cancels Gymnastic Season
(Ames, IA) — Iowa State gymnastics is canceling the rest of its season. Athletics director Shamaree Brown says the program did not meet the minimum requirements of student-athletes to safely compete. Burn Pit Fire Burns Down 2 Barns In Lawton
(Lawton, IA) — Crews are cleaning up after an out of control burn pit fire burns two barns to the ground yesterday in Lawton. Lawton Fire & Rescue Fire Chief Travis Ludwig says fire control was difficult because of the lack of fire hydrants nearby, winds and the surrounding dry landscape. No injuries were reported. The barns are a total loss.
Sioux City Council Consider Rezoning For Small Apartment Complex
(Sioux City, IA) — A developer is looking to rezone a piece of land to build a small apartment complex in Sioux City. City officials say two out of 35 people responded to mailed notices. One resident is against the new build, citing lack of parking, possible increase in drug use and other concerns. The other resident supports the new development and wants it to be used toward affordable housing for the elderly. Sioux City Council will be considering Todd Calvillo’s request at today’s meeting.
