(Lewis) While ice conditions were ideal last week, that won’t be the case moving forward. High temperatures are expected to reach the 50s on Monday and climb into the 60s by Tuesday.
John Lorenzen, a fisheries biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, says that with forecast highs that are warm and overnight lows above freezing, ice will deteriorate quickly—especially with strong winds.
Lorenzen adds that geese have kept holes open on many area lakes, and anglers should be aware that those openings will expand as ice weakens. He advises avoiding fishing near those edges and notes that ice typically does not form in February, so officials are hoping current conditions hold for as long as possible.
